Effects of Global Warming – GCSE Biology

global warming has a range of biological consequences one such example of a consequence is the melting of sea ice in this animation you can see the Arctic Ice receding as the ice melts these consequences impact biodiversity you should be able to describe some of the biological consequences of global warming and the impact on biodiversity so what are some of the biological consequen es of global warming global warming causes the sea ice to melt and raises sea levels because polar bears hunt on sea ice as it melts it means there's less ice for them to hunt from which means less food for them as well as this raised sea levels and flooding may also kill plants causing a loss of habitat this reduces biodiversity what other consequences are there we are also seeing unusual weather patterns with changes in temperature and changes in rainfall these unusual weather patterns include drought and tropical storms which have severe consequences both for humans and for wildlife these changes in environment result in a loss of habitat and less biodiversity how could this affect migratory species the changing climate and habitat loss means species are migrating around the globe and competing with existing species in some areas increased competition means decreased biodiversity too and the impact of this can be quite widespread this diagram shows the distribution of malaria carrying mosquito species in red you can see that mosquitoes are normally found around the equator where it's warm enough for them to live if global temperatures rise we might see mosquitoes moving further north and south and this could affect the spread of diseases such as malaria thanks for watching if you want to take your gcsc revision test the next level head over to Launchpad learning.com and check out our Smart Learning platform that's been designed to get you top results in your exams we cover your whole specification and make revision fun with interactive quizzes easy to follow videos and more you'll be kept motivated by your own AI tutor who's here to support you every step of the way to check it out for yourself click here or click here to keep watching a selection of the videos from our full GCSE biology course see you there
